CORE Components

Theory of Knowledge - by providing a space for students to reflect on the development of knowledge, TOK plays a very special role in the IB DP.

TOK prompts students to be aware of themselves as thinkers and recognize the need to act responsibly in an increasingly interconnected world
TOK is assessed through an Oral Presentation and a 1,600 word essay and MUST earn a passing score to be eligible to receive the full IB Diploma

Extended Essay - this is an independent piece of research that culminates with a 4,000-word paper

The extended essay provides preparation for undergraduate research writing, and an opportunity for students to investigate a topic of personal interest to them (relevant to the student's DP subject)
Extended Essay must earn a passing score to be eligible to receive the full IB diploma

Creativity, Activity, & Service (CAS) - involves student investment in a range of activities alongside their academic studies

Student reflect on their CAS experiences as part of the DP, and provide evidence of achieving the seven learning outcomes for CAS
CAS is an important counterbalance to the academic pressures of DP - it provides opportunities for collaboration and self-determination and enables students to enhance their personal and interpersonal development by learning through experience
Students must meet all seven learning outcomes plus engage in a collaborative project to "pass CAS" - an integral part to earning the full IB Diploma
