What is it?

The extended essay is an independent, self-directed piece of research, within a specific IB subject culminating in a maximum of 4,000-word research paper accompanied by a reflection form of no more than 500 words. The extended essay is intended to provide an opportunity for (Extended Essay Guide, 2018):

  1. Practical preparation for undergraduate research

  2. An opportunity for students to investigate a topic of special interest to them, which is also related to one of the student’s six DP subjects.

Why do we do it?

The EE provides you with the opportunity to explore a topic of personal interest in-depth. You will develop your research and writing skills and, if applicable to your subject area, your investigation skills. These skills are useful in your post-secondary studies.

The aims of the extended essay are for students to:

• engage in independent research with intellectual initiative and rigor

• develop research, thinking, self-management and communication skills

• reflect on what has been learned throughout the research and writing process.
